Sports Turf Installation in Orange County

A sports turf install is fundamentally different from a residential lawn or even a commercial common area. The product spec is different. The base build is different. The safety standards are different. The cost basis is different. What works as landscape turf will fail under the lateral cuts, falls, and sustained high-intensity use that athletic surfaces demand. Getting it right means starting with the right product for the sport – and building the system to safety standard.

Go Turf installs sports turf across OC for schools, parks, HOAs, private fields, and residential sports applications. Every project includes a 3-year labor warranty plus the manufacturer’s warranty. Call (970) 274-0100 or request a sports turf consultation.

SPORTS TURF APPLICATIONS

Sports Turf Applications

Artificial turf supports a broad range of athletic applications. Each has specific product and infill requirements that differ from a standard landscape spec.

Soccer and Football

Soccer and football fields are the highest-profile sports turf application with the most developed safety standard ecosystem. Pile heights for FIFA-quality soccer surfaces typically run 40 to 65mm with a crumb rubber or sand/rubber hybrid infill that provides ball roll, traction, and surface resilience these sports require. Shock pads are standard for competitive-level facilities.

Baseball and Softball

Baseball and softball applications cover infield and outfield areas with different specs. Outfield and infield grass areas use synthetic turf with a shorter pile (15 to 30mm) for consistent ball roll and appropriate traction for lateral movement. Base path areas require specific products for sliding resistance and shock absorption.

Multi-Use Recreation

Schools, parks, and recreation facilities most commonly need multi-use surfaces that support a range of sports and activities. These installations prioritize durability, safety across multiple activities, and maintenance simplicity. A 40mm pile height product with sand infill and an optional shock pad is the most common multi-use spec in OC.

Residential Sports Applications

Backyard putting greens, batting cages, multi-sport practice areas, short-game golf, and bocce courts use sport-specific products tuned for ball roll, spike compatibility, or repeated impact. See backyard putting greens for putting-specific specs.

SPORTS TURF APPLICATIONS

Shock Pads and Safety Standards

A shock pad is a resilient layer (typically 10 – 25mm thick) installed beneath the turf backing on top of the compacted aggregate base. It provides additional impact attenuation and gives the surface a more consistent, cushioned feel underfoot. For competitive-level fields and any application involving children’s athletic use, shock pads are strongly recommended and in some cases required by facility standards.

Two safety standards apply to most OC athletic surfaces:

ASTM F1292

Impact attenuation for surfaces used in playground and athletic applications. Surface must limit the Head Injury Criterion (HIC) below a defined threshold at a given fall height. Required for school and public rec facilities.

FIFA Quality Program

Surface performance for soccer field turf (ball roll, traction, shock absorption, surface hardness). FIFA-certified products are tested through independent labs. Required for competitive soccer at FIFA Quality or Quality Pro level.
Shock pad thickness and spec are matched to the specific sport, fall height requirements, and safety standard being met. Go Turf specifies and installs shock pads on all sports turf projects where safety standards or client specs require them.
COST RANGES

FAQS

Frequently asked questions

What Sports Can Artificial Turf Support?

Soccer, football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, tennis, multi-use rec, and residential sports applications like batting cages, putting greens, and backyard sports courts. Each has specific product and infill requirements that differ from the standard landscape spec.

What Pile Height Is Standard for Sports Fields?

Varies by sport. Soccer fields typically 40 – 65mm. Multi-use rec fields 35 – 50mm. Baseball outfield 15 – 30mm shorter pile for consistent ball roll. Pile height should match the sport’s technical requirements and any applicable FIFA or ASTM standard.

Does Go Turf Install Shock Pads?

Yes. Go Turf installs shock pads on all sports projects where safety standards or client specs require them. Pad thickness is matched to the sport, fall height, and ASTM or facility standard being met. Pads are included in project scope and pricing from the start – not a separate change order.

What Certifications Should Sports Turf Meet?

For competitive soccer, FIFA Quality or FIFA Quality Pro certification is the relevant standard. For school and public rec facilities, ASTM F1292 impact attenuation compliance is typically required. Go Turf specs products that meet applicable standards for each application and provides certification documentation.

How Does Sports Turf Differ From Landscape Turf?

Higher face weight fibers (50 – 80+ oz) engineered for sustained athletic use, sport-specific infill (crumb rubber or sand/rubber hybrid rather than simple sand), and typically shock pads for safety compliance. Sub-base is built to higher load specs. Product selection and installation process are both significantly more technical than a residential landscape project.

How Much Does a Backyard Sports Surface Cost?

Residential sports installations (backyard putting greens, batting cages, sport courts, bocce) typically run $18,000 to $80,000, depending on size and product spec. Sport-specific turf carries a higher per-foot price than landscape turf because of fiber density and specialty infill requirements.
